Contemporary society, at least western society, attaches great importance to aspects of personal success and the ability to adapt successfully to existential challenges. Parenthood is no exception: feeling that one is a good parent, able to cope with the transitions and developmental difficulties of one's children, while respecting existing ideals is, in most cases, a powerful driver of one's sense of efficacy and self-affirmation. Not only that: during pregnancy, but also before, the ability to conceive and deliver an intact and perfectly healthy child is a source of self-esteem for parents, particularly mothers.[...]
