When a request for help is made to us, the early stages of the consultation can give us essential elements for building an explanatory hypothesis about the function of the symptom and the most appropriate type of setting.
We first consider the question: who is asking for help? Who manifests a symptom? Who suffers from it? These three characteristics do not always belong to a single person.
Then we ask what phase of the life cycle the person asking for help and the other members of his or her family are going through; why is he or she asking for help now?
And thus, what is the latent unconscious demand underlying the manifest demand? [...]
