The experience gained in interviews with "infertile" couples has made it possible to highlight the predominant weight of the mind in cases of unexplained or partially unexplained infertility. Unresolved emotional aspects related to the life of the couple, or of one of the partners, seem to influence the generative capacity. Clinical experience has suggested the existence of a deep link between unexplained infertility and the presence of conflicts that make it impossible to deal with the possibility of generating. There are many reasons why one wishes to conceive and, among them, the need for reparation. Reparation to the fracture in one's own becoming, but also to that of significant adults in one's own life. During psychotherapeutic pathways with couples undergoing assisted fertilisation, the recurrence of unprocessed traumatic and/or mournful experiences that have occurred in the course of their lives and those of their reference adults has been observed. In order to investigate and verify the possible correlation and incidence between unprocessed trauma/mourning and unexplained infertility, these aspects were studied on a sample of 89 infertile couples at the beginning of a PMA programme. 71% of the sample had at least one unprocessed bereavement or trauma. Unexplained infertility can be read as a symptom behind which there are claims to be, to be identifiable. Trauma was then seen as an impossibility to acquire a meaning of self in relation to the context in which one is inserted, an obstacle to the possibility of searching for one's own identity. Identity understood as presence in oneself.
