This article identifies Group Relations (GR) as a method of studying groups and as a form of observation of the way people play their role within groups and systems. The method helps to distinguish between fantasy and reality, truth and falsehood, projection and introjection, transference and countertransference. The article describes the characteristics of GR work, including work with transference and counter-transference phenomena; the ability to interpret group unconscious dynamics; knowledge of work within the boundaries of space and time, as well as within psychological boundaries; clarity about work on roles and tasks; work with phenomenal aspects of the group as a whole having the ability to generate working hypotheses about the group and its organisational functioning.
