In responding to the criticisms addressed to him, Seligman provides a particular proof of intellectual coherence, because he uses them to "complex" his own discourse further, according to the non-disjunctive method of "and, and", rather than the contrasting method of "or, or", typical of many academic controversies. This attitude allows him to highlight even better one paradoxical aspect of the analyst's mental functioning: that of maintaining attention and at the same time accepting that he is often diverted from his object and interrupted. Another point touched upon is the misunderstanding of identifying scientificity with the linearity of thought. Going beyond the more conventional terminology finally allows the author to understand psychoanalysis as a means to achieve something more essential about being - a term that Winnicott and Heidegger share.
