The article proposes some reflections on the problems and opportunities that the practice of dialogue encounters in the present, inscribed in the framework of the whole of human history. The present is considered as the troubled beginning of a new form of society, the society-world, understood, with Morin, as a new community of destiny. Three notions are discussed, considered capable of highlighting the most challenging issues: heterogeneity, simultaneity and the fall of the hierarchy. It is assumed, with Girard, that human social interactions have always been regulated through hierarchies unanimously believed to be of sacred or extra-human origin, based primarily on the evolutionary effectiveness of the sacrificial device. It is hypothesized that, with the affirmation of the narratives that reveal the innocence of the expiatory victim (especially the Gospels), a radical process of weakening of the hierarchy has begun, leading from the vertical regulation of social interactions to the unprecedented challenge of more direct and horizontal regulations. With modernism, and then with the recent globalization, marked by the development of hyper-fast communication technologies, this process has experienced a powerful acceleration, with mainly individualistic and destructive outcomes. It is suggested that different outcomes, capable of fostering processes of positive subjectivation, require the promotion of an ecological feeling (in Bateson's sense) of relational participation in the society-world in formation.
