Challenging Melanocytic Lesions
This section is dedicated to difficult histopathological cases concerning melanocytic lesions.
Cases herein presented are selected as the most interesting and didactic among all those that have been discussed by a large group of Italian surgical pathologists in a monthly collegial on-line meeting organized by A. Perasole (founder of the project in 2005) and C. Massone, supported by ADOI since 2021.
All cases presented in the collegial on-line meetings derive from daily routine and they represent melanocytic lesions that need a second opinion because of complexity, presence of conflicting criteria or whatever when the support by a colleague is searched. All cases are digitalized by a virtual microscope and are on-line available for all the participants already before the meetings; therefore, each participant before each meeting can review and judge each virtual slides independently and give his/her personal opinion filling an on-line form with diagnosis, complexity of the lesion and diagnostic confidence.
During the meetings, all cases are collegially discussed, the proposed diagnoses formulated by each pathologist are presented and then participants are again asked with an on-line form to give a final diagnosis. A conclusive report with all collected diagnoses and comments is available at the end of each meeting. Best cases worthy of publication are periodically published in this section.
External surgical pathologists and readers of Dermatology Reports, can download and review the published cases following the link to virtual slides. Comments are welcome and should be submitted to Dr. Luigi Naldi, Editor-in-Chief of Dermatology Reports.
In order to open the virtual microscope and review the cases, Aperio software is needed (available at: https://www.aperio.dev/)
