From a historical point of view, the idea of Region – in Italian political and institutional culture – has its roots in the heart of the nineteenth century. It was born with Cesare Correnti in 1852 and, for statistical reasons, it was adopted starting from the Unification of 1861. Since then, the territorial division of the Peninsula, created without consulting the populations involved nor even founded on serious historical linguistic and cultural studies, has never changed, despite the numerous requests that have occurred over the time and which are illustrated here, from Minghetti to Miglio, from the Agnelli Foundation to the Italian Geographical Society.
