Although he is considered one of the greatest political philosophers of the twentieth century, Oakeshott, as is well known, did not have a high regard for politics and indeed believed that over the centuries it had constantly offered an "unpleasant spectacle". One might even think that he dealt with it, albeit in the particular way he did, to warn against having illusions about it, or perhaps to highlight the trouble that the idea of improving the human condition through politics could cause. Especially after it became "scientific".
