Every year in Italy there are about 1200-1400 new cases of pleural mesothelioma with an incidence of 3.84/100000/year in men and 1.45/100000/year in women, therefore lower than the threshold of 6/100000/year that classify it as a rare tumor according to the Eurocare definition. Doing clinical research in the field of rare cancers is difficult, given the smallness of the sample: this leads to a lack of evidence that makes clinical decision more complicated and ultimately results in greater difficulty in maintaining a good quality of care.
