Dr. Swathi Merugu

Dr. Swathi Merugu is an immunologist who studies the role of the immune system in various cancers and work on clinical trials majorly focused on Immunotherapy in various cancers. The overarching goal of her research is to develop new immunological assays to investigate the role of different immune populations in cancers before and after treatment with Immunotherapeutic agents. Her work has practical applications in finding patients for enrolling into precision medicine trials based on biomarkers in patient blood samples and suggesting oncologists for possible treatment options with investigational new drugs. Her Ph.D research is the first study in the world to demonstrate the clinical utility of neuroblastoma circulating tumor cells (CTCs) detected by the ISx (Imagestream cytometer) as noninvasive pharmacodynamic biomarkers of novel therapies in early-phase clinical trials. Currently, her work is majorly focused on working on many phase I and phase II clinical trials where she’s developing novel immune-based assays to find out the significant contribution of immune subsets before the treatment with immunotherapy comparing the immune subset populations during and after the treatment helping the oncologist for choosing the best treatment options in Immune related cancers.
